What's in your bag?

I feel like I live out of my backpack most days, especially at events. I thought this could be an interesting post to share what we all put in our backpacks. Maybe we’ll find something new to put in our own bag.

Here’s my list

  • Laptop
  • Laptop Charger
  • Headphones (recently upgraded to noise cancelling)
  • 2 each of USB-C, Micro-USB, Lighting cables
  • 2-3 USB wall plugs
  • 1-2 books to read
  • 2 port Portable Battery
  • Toothpaste, toothbrush, and floss (I actually have a full size tube and I’ve never had a problem)
  • Antiperspirant
  • Insulated Water Bottle
  • Ibuprofen
  • Business Cards
  • Stickers of me and my cats
  • HackCon postcards from last year

My standard backpack:

  • MacBook Pro 13"
  • Kindle - I read 2-3 books concurrently, this is the only way I don’t get terribly weighed down.
  • Power Bank - Always be charging.
  • Belkin Portable Surge Protector - See above. This is a really sweet charger & surge protectors. You have no idea how many friends you can make until you start carying a surge protector around with you.
  • USB-C Adapters Galore - The future sucks. See above.
  • Leuchtturm1917 Hard Cover Medium A5 Dotted Notebook x2 - These are the best - they have page numbers, tables of content, and two bookmarks. I keep one for work and one for personal use.
  • Paper Mate InkJoy 300RT - Black 1mm Pens - After some searching I decided these were the best pens that I could reliably get at any store, but also love.
  • Alaska Bear Eye Mask - Having an eye mask makes so many places so much more sleepable: planes, crappy hotels, NJ transit if you want to be worried for your safety.
  • Sleepy Time, Peppermint, and Good Earth Tea - See above. Plus tea is the best drink on a plane.
  • Rain Jacket & Umbrella - Depending on the coast, one is more acceptable than the other. @jade got me a pretty sweet rain jacket that I always have with me.
  • Loon Stickers - Because you can’t just order one loon sticker for your laptop.
  • Business Cards
  • Passport
  • Tissues
  • Ibuprofen

So yesterday my bag spilled while I was moving tables in a coffee shop and revealed the cornucopia of random stuff I have in my backpack and it made me think of this thread.
Here’s what I always have on me:

  • My bullet journal (dotted notebooks only)
  • My notebook for coding notes, UI sketches, notes about any tech related books or podcasts I consume, tech resources people recommend, hack/app/website ideas, and good advice. It’s basically a bunch of cheatsheets.
  • cute stationary
  • washi tape
  • I kid you not, over 35 pens and markers
  • headphones
  • phone charger, laptop charger, portable charger
  • various hackathon stickers
  • glass water bottle (the Coaches know very well how I feel about staying hydrated)
  • reusable silverware + straw
  • red lipstick, chapstick
  • a replica of Dana Scully’s FBI ID
