Luis Ocampo, co-director of PickHacks

What’re your top 3 pieces of advice that you’d give to new organizers?

  1. Learn from the community. Go to other hackathons, meet other organizers, read event recaps, you name it. There’s a plethora of information out there that can really help you visualize your own event.

  2. Have a game plan. Timelines and action items really help; it gets a lot more stressful the closer it is to your event, but having a lot done before then will really help you relax.

  3. Listen to people. It’s really easy to set a vision for your event and do whatever you can to executive it, but some of the best ideas we incorporated were from coffee conversations with people where I’d simply ask “if there was a hackathon here, what would you want to see at it?”

Awesome to hear you liked this post @wise4rmgod!!

What inspired you the most?

Luis is the man and I definitely have never horribly mispronounced his name.

The passion he had to just host an event with so many setbacks and working with so many organizers too from different locations and his still young too.
